Insights in Arizona

Advantage Insights Consulting Network, LLC send Peter Hilts and Doug Hering to Arizona for the state charter school conference. The Arizona Charter School Association asked Hilts and Hering to present on strategic compensation, repeating their presentation from the national conference in New Orleans. Immediately after that, Hilts and Hering presented their newest program The Triangle of Tension.

Strategic Compensation is a concept that Hering and Hilts developed while at TCA. TCA has since implemented a form of strategic compensation. More than a program, strategic compensation provides a framework within which schools or school districts can think about their strategic goals, develop rubrics to measure teachers' performance against those strategic goals, and then design a mathematical model to provide financial rewards based on the strategic value teachers provide to the school or district.

The Triangle of Tension assists schools in their attempt to resolve the tension that charters face between facilities, enrollment and class size, and staff pay. Most charter schools have to prioritize one of these elements of the triangle. This session asks participants to look at these three elements in a strategic way, discussing mission and values and budgeting.

Presentations were well received and Arizona provided a nice relief from the Colorado cold. Peter and Doug will also be presenting in Texas and California early in 2009. In California, they'll add a session on Asberger's and a session on charter school lifecycles. These sessions should prove valuable to a number of constituents.
